History:

Safe-Way Bus Company was incorporated in 1970 by Worth and Mary Stiles.  It is solely owned by the Stiles family of husband and wife; Worth and Mary Stiles and their three children; Dan, Jane and Tom.  Mary passed away in 2006 after an arduous fight against interstitial lung disease.  Worth passed away in 2008 from a broken heart and lung cancer. Their children, Dan, Jane and Tom miss them daily and reference their parents’ shared knowledge and teaching and they continue to own and operate Safe-Way Bus.

Prior to beginning Safe-Way, Worth was employed by George A. Hormel in their transportation department for 20 years.  His wife, Mary Stiles, was a teacher and principal in the Austin, MN school system.  Their children “grew up” with Safe-Way Bus Company.  They have worked all areas of the business throughout their elementary, high school, and college years.  Dan graduated from St. Mary’s University in Winona, MN in 1979.  In 1980, Jane graduated from St. Mary’s of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN.  Tom graduated from the University of Michigan in 1986.  Today, Jane manages and operates the Twin Cities terminal, Tom manages and operates the Hudson, WI terminal, and Dan manages and operates the Somerset, WI terminal.

During Safe-Way’s first year of operation, we provided school transportation services for private elementary and secondary schools in St. Paul and the south eastern suburbs.  In 1971, Safe-Way acquired South and West St. Paul Transit Inc., a transit bus system operating in St. Paul, South St. Paul and West St. Paul, second in size only to the Metropolitan Transit Commission in passengers carried.  This system was operated until August 1975 at which time it was sold to the Metropolitan Transit Commission.  During this time, Safe-Way also continued a slow, controlled expansion in the school transportation industry.  In 1980, Mr. Stiles helped develop a transportation system for ACTC (Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities) providing service for Hamline, Macalester, and St. Thomas.  We now have long standing, multi-year contracts with St. Paul Public Schools, ISD 625; Inver Grove Heights Public School; ISD 199, South St. Paul Public Schools, Special Dist. 6; Hope Community Academy; Laura Jeffrey Charter School, Hudson, WI Public Schools, Somerset, WI public schools and ACTC (Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities.)
